Meatloaf recipe earns Aiken man a place in national cookbook
John Martone of Aiken saw his late mother Rose's 1950s meatloaf recipe chosen for Cook's Country Lost Recipes contest. The dish features a sliced hard boiled egg wrapped in prosciutto and is pictured with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Published in From Our Grandmothers' Kitchen, the dish honors Martone’s brother Ralph, who became a sergeant during Army service in 1953. The book, available soon, offers prizes up to 25,000 dollars though Martone only sought family pride.
