National overdose deaths surpass traffic fatalities in US
CDC data show 37,485 drug overdose deaths in 2009 versus 36,284 traffic fatalities. Prescription drug abuse is labeled an epidemic as overdoses become the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths, a shift from earlier years when motor vehicle crashes led. Government began tracking overdose data in 1979. In 2002 overdoses rose to second place, behind crashes.

Aiken County coroner Tim Carlton notes a sharp rise in overdose deaths tied to prescription pain and anxiety drugs. He cites a CDC report showing U S deaths from unintentional drug overdoses more than doubling between 1999 and 2005 and reports a local man’s death from hydrocodone and methadone as accidental. In 2010 and year to date, overdoses outpace traffic fatalities but grow faster than them. Last year 28 overdose deaths vs 34 traffic deaths in Aiken County.
