President Bush warned that without rapid congressional action the country could face a financial panic and a painful recession. He spoke after inviting Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain to a White House meeting.
McCain challenged Obama to delay the Friday night debate to join forces on the financial crisis. Obama declined, saying the next president must deal with more than one priority. McCain would halt campaigning to return to Washington and work on a solution. Obama would continue debate prep while consulting negotiators and Henry Paulson.
