Parole and Probation Misunderstood in South Carolina
Pratt of the South Carolina Parole and Community Corrections Board told the Aiken Kiwanis Club that 80 percent of parolees complete their sentences. He argued parole and probation reduce prison crowding, offer restitution to victims, support families, and save about 6000 dollars per inmate yearly for state supervision. He discussed the Community Corrections Bill adding halfway houses and parole options for non-violent offenders after one quarter of their sentences.

Airlines Discounting Fares Amid Slump Says ATA Economist
Major U S airlines slash transcontinental and round trip fares to spur demand while the industry runs losses totaling about two hundred twenty million in 1980 and nearing one billion for the year ending June 30. ATA chief economist George James notes a continued weak outlook with August traffic up only 6.8 percent from a year earlier and fare wars pushing prices down from 499 to 238 for New York to California. Airlines faced recession, fuel price spikes, controller strikes, and bankruptcy filings like Braniff as they battle to outlast rivals.
