Deputy Killed in Shalimar as Gunman Barricades at Motel
Okaloosa County Deputy Bill Myers, 64, was fatally shot outside a lawyer’s office by 33-year-old Joel Dixson Smith, a postal worker. Smith fled to a Comfort Suites in Niceville, where he barricaded himself and was shot by deputies after tear gas was used. Myers had retired in 2013 and worked part time delivering civil papers to fund a trip for his granddaughter.
