The Associated Press reports Houston Astros pitcher Don Sutton delivered a 3-0 three-hit shutout of the Atlanta Braves at the Astrodome. Sutton earned his 35th win and 55th career shutout, drawing comparisons to General Sherman in Atlanta lore.
Sutton, who has defeated the Braves more than any NL pitcher, labored through a subpar night yet benefited from timely scoring as Chicago Cubs beat St. Louis 4-3 with Ty Waller and Leon Durham homers and a ninth inning sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales. Expos top Phillies 6-2 behind Steve Rogers five-hitter and two RBI from Warren Cromartie and Tim Wallach. Pirates rally for 5-3 win over Mets on Jason Thompson three-run homer. Seaver earns 13th win as Reds top Padres 3-2 with two relievers. Giants defeat Dodgers 5-2 as Larry Herndon drives in three with an inside-the-park homer.
Sparky Anderson will root for the Milwaukee Brewers today though his Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 Tuesday night. John Wockenfuss hit two homers to power Detroit in the win.
Milwaukee beat Boston 10-8 to open a crucial three game series, with Ted Simmons driving in four and the game decided in the ninth. Detroit expanded its AL East margin to 142 games over Milwaukee and Boston as the Brewers head to Tiger Stadium for three.
