Miss Deaf South Carolina selects Jessica Young

Jessica Young of North Augusta, raised with hearing challenges, was chosen Miss Deaf South Carolina on August 7 after competing with four others in Charleston. A 21 year old College of Charleston Special Education student, she will advance to Miss Deaf America in Norfolk, Virginia, on July 4. Her platform supports rights for the deaf and hard of hearing.

SCE&G plans 645 MW gas powered plant in Aiken County

SCE&G announced a $180 million gas fueled generator facility in Aiken County adding 645 megawatts of capacity. The project uses 300 megawatts from new combined cycle turbines and 150 from repowered coal units plus 100 existing coal and 95 from internal combustion turbines, with aims to improve air emissions and sustain community presence. Neville Lorick called the outcome the best possible for the Ing Urquhart General System.

Hit and run suspect in assault case linked to Binkley

Mary Aline Binkley 24 of Owens Pond Road Aiken faces charges of assault and battery with intent to kill and resisting arrest after a Tuesday confrontation in a Wal Mart lot. Deputies attempted to serve a bench warrant for a probation violation when she allegedly dragged Deputy Marcus Padgett, fled, and was tackled by Michael Frank at Fazoli's. Binkley has prior probation and a 1998 obscene telephone calls conviction.

Names on committee challenged by Hightower in council vote

Aiken County Councilman Willar Hightower was the lone dissenter as grievances committee appointments were approved after the Administrative Committee replaced two nominees from an original list. He argued the panel was stacked and tilted toward officials’ offices, while Chairman Joel Randall emphasized fairness and propriety.
