Ables Named Deputy Coroner for Aiken County

Darryl Ables, a 33 year old veteran investigator and Wagoner native now in Graniteville, was selected by Coroner Sue Townsend as deputy coroner for Aiken County. He will join Tim Carlton, with Townsend planning an additional deputy, as the office expands to handle heavy workload and high traffic death investigations.

Clinton vows flood aid during Tarboro visit

President Clinton promised federal assistance for flood victims as North Carolina endures more rain from a cold front and Tropical Storm Harvey. Downs appoints 2 new attorneys in death penalty case

Augusta drifter William Downs, 32, will receive two taxpayer funded private attorneys for his capital murder trial for allegedly strangling Keenan O Malia, 6, on April 17. Circuit Judge Rodney Peeples named Aiken attorney James Whittle and Barnwell attorney Tim Moore to supplant Assistant Public Defender Wallis Alves. The solicitor estimated the trial may occur in 2000 or 2001.
