South Carolina's unemployment rate eased to 4.9 percent in August with 1,300 nonfarm jobs created statewide. Manufacturing rose 1,300, trade 1,200, and services and transportation 300 each, while government shed 1,400 and construction fell 400.

Two firms Black & Veatch and ADTECHS Corp won 17 million dollars in remediation contracts at the Savannah River Site and a plan to subcontract over half of future work to outside companies by 1997. WSRC aims to shift most cleanup to private contractors as part of a multi year environmental program with a 230 billion dollar nationwide budget.

Charleston Navy Base closes after a century of service

About 1 500 people watched the USS Kidd slip away on the Cooper River marking the end of operations at Charleston Base once the Navy's third largest homeport. The base will be permanently closed next April with buildings secured.
