Guilty plea in Brooks investment fraud case in Aiken
Aiken man Jay Brooks was found guilty of defrauding investors via two schemes the Charles Howell Trust and Compass Academy. Victims included an aging couple whose funds funded a new house a $21 000 ring and a $25 000 adoption fee. Assistant Attorney General Petrano said Brooks lied to a securities commissioner about clients and funds. Brooks apologized promising to repay what he can, and his attorney claimed past earnings supported the schemes. Creighton Waters prosecuted the case with Teddy Kulmala reporting for the Aiken Standard.
