Aiken Community Playhouse turns 50 from tin building roots

Mike Gibbons, now executive director, recalls first viewing Peter Pan in 1977 and his ties to the Playhouse. The troupe began in 1952 after Will Cole and Parker Deans urged local support. By 1968 funds were raised to relocate, and in 1974 the ACP settled in a tin building at Virginia Acres Park under leaders including Whatley.

Savannah River Caucus inks river study agreement

The bistate Savannah River Caucus formed by Georgia and South Carolina lawmakers met in Hartwell to sign a pact for a comprehensive Savannah River Basin study. SCANA rate hike approved to fund nuclear reactors

State regulators approved a about 3 percent electric rate increase for SCE&G to cover costs of two new nuclear reactors at the V C Summer station. The Oct. 30 effective date raises a 1000 kWh bill by 4.17 to 142.28 dollars. SCE&G and Santee Cooper fund 55 percent of the roughly 10 billion project, with 3.5 billion spent by August and costs trimmed from initial forecasts.
