In North Augusta the first in-person public debate on the proposed county council bill drew about 30 attendees at an American Legion meeting. Opinions were sharply divided but the event produced little dramatic exchange.
Aiken lawyer Williams opposed the council manager bill calling it a blank check with unlimited power and no party primaries while banker Maxwell supported it citing tax savings and better coordination. They debated effects on the county sheriff administrator duties and school board and noted public meetings and delegation limits. debate continues on Page 2.
Weekend weather shows a chance of showers Saturday and Sunday. Rain continues into Tuesday for mountain trips. Highs reach mid 80s regionally, with urban highs around 90s. Nights stay comfortable with mid 60s temperatures.

Perelman, born in Brooklyn, has written 18 books including Parlor Bedlam and Bath and Westward Ha! and Baby Its Cold Inside.
Washington archbishop Cardinal O'Boyle warned that any Roman Catholic in his diocese who performs or assists in abortion is subject to excommunication. He called direct killing of the infant a violation of divine law, unchanged by civil law, and issued the guidelines to medical and paramedical personnel.

The Earl and Countess of Malmesbury visited Aiken after staying with Gov. and Mrs. McNair in Columbia. They toured Oconee State Park and discussed the gift of one of South Carolina’s Lords Proprietors documents, arranged by Patrick Payne Henderson. The couple praised South Carolina's friendliness and countryside, noting the trip as their most memorable.
Sumter County officials seek three Aiken men named in warrants for being accessories to murder and conspiracy to rob in the slaying of Willie Luther Odom 55 at a Ku Klux Klan rally at Sumter Speedway. James Knipfer Raymond Scott and Glenn Cook are sought along with ten others. Knipfer was arrested and held on bond. Odom and family attended the event out of curiosity. he was killed by a pistol shot to the back of the head.
James Henderson the Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor visits Aiken to open the county headquarters at 236 Richland Ave 12 30 p m with local candidates Marshall Cain Julian Dunbar Zack Fulmer Delmos Weeks and Bill Burgess. He then tours shopping centers in Mitchell Center Kalmia Plaza Graniteville Midland Valley and North Augusta So. McMillan also attends a 6 to 9 p m barbecue at White Pond Community Building tickets via John Byars 649 6854.
