Aiken County Council trims jail debt by up to four million
The Aiken County Council approved an 8-1 vote to use about four million dollars from the debt service fund to reduce the 12 million jail financing. Councilman Hightower opposed moving debt service funds, urging caution and noting potential use against other bonds. County Administrator Shepherd confirmed roughly four million sits in the debt fund balance and stressed bonds were issued at a low rate with expectations rates won’t rise. Councilwoman McKenzie said a forthcoming report on interest will guide a cost-saving path before bonds are issued.
