Baynham pottery site hailed as rich alkaline glaze find
Dr. Newell of the Georgia Archaeological Institute described 1996 surveys at the Baynham site in the Old Edgefield District revealing the richest undisturbed alkaline glaze collection in the state. The excavation uncovered intact vessels, beehive jugs, and five gallon containers, with glazes ranging from soft green to purplish blue. The Baynhams, linked to early Edgefield wares, are highlighted as key figures in the late period of the district’s pottery tradition, with a public lecture slated at the Aiken Historical Society Museum.
