Hungary Values Reform Over East Bloc Unity
A senior Hungarian official said Hungary is allowing East Germans to flee to the West to pursue democratic reforms rather than maintain East bloc unity. Officials reported no Soviet pressure and noted about 14,000 refugees arrived since Sunday, with 10,000 more escaping since border barriers began being dismantled. West German and Polish officials weighed implications as Prague and Warsaw hosted refugees. Kovacs defended Hungary’s reform-focused policy against calls for bloc conformity. Border closure timing remained undecided.
