Historical Society to hold joint meeting at depot
The Aiken County Historical Society hosts a combined meeting with the Friends of the Aiken Railroad Depot at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Depot, home to the Visitors Center and Train Museum. Don Barnes, a lifelong railroad enthusiast, will speak, followed by the unveiling of a historical marker. The event is free and open to the public. The Depot, rebuilt and grand opened in 2010, is located at 406 Park Ave. SE.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety starts a nine week Citizens Academy with Thursday evening classes from 6 30 to 9 30. Chief Charles Barranco explains officers serve as both police and fire, guiding residents through patrols firefighting use of force community policing and investigations. Residents tour booths and equipment and share why they joined the program.
