Woolard named next Du Pont chairman and CEO

Du Pont Co. said Edgar S. Woolard Jr. will succeed Richard E. Heckert as chairman and CEO next spring. Heckert, 64, retires after the annual meeting on April 26. Woolard, 54, has been president and COO, directing all operations of the Wilmington based chemical and specialty products firm.

Plane Trouble Strikes Legislators on Emergency Landing

Two South Carolina congressmen aboard a Piedmont Airlines plane bound for Washington faced an emergency landing in Columbia after engine trouble. The 129 passengers were unharmed, and damage was limited to the engine. Rep. Liz Patterson said her life flashed before her. Rep. Butler Derrick called the experience frightening.

Gilbert Heads For Gulf Coast

Hurricane Gilbert roared from the Yucatan into the Gulf of Mexico with 160 mph winds, battering Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. It weakened slightly on landfall and was forecast to strengthen toward the U.S. Gulf Coast, with Brownsville expected as a likely target as the storm moved northwest at about 15 mph.

Belvedere Man Seeks Return Of Seized Sex Materials

Belvedere resident Frank Fargis files a July 25 motion in the Court of Common Pleas seeking the return of material seized in a May 24 raid on T and T Graphics.
