Former President Ford endorsed Robert Bork as uniquely qualified for the Supreme Court at the start of Senate hearings. Ford, seated beside Bork, called him a distinguished private attorney, professor, solicitor general and DC Court of Appeals judge. Senators urged the session to reveal Bork's fitness beyond rhetoric.
The Aiken City Council rejected a subdivision plan for a 1.782 acre tract at Grace Avenue and Sumter Street. The smaller lot would be 0.729 acres, below the R-1E minimum, and the approval hinged on a possible zoning variance. Local opponents argued the decision could affect nearby property values and the city economy tied to Hitchcock Woods. Voter turnout in county precincts was light with polls open until 7 p.m. for nine district board seats and several write-in candidates in play.
August retail sales rose 1.3 percent to 128.6 billion dollars, the largest gain in six months, led by a 4.5 percent rise in car sales. Excluding autos, gains were 0.3 percent with mixed results in furniture, hardware, and building supplies.
