Graniteville wildfire destroys 250 acres of woodland

A Graniteville wildfire started Tuesday by two boys playing with matches burned 250 acres of woodland. Nearly 200 firefighters from multiple agencies battled the blaze through Wednesday night near homes and businesses, with containment by Thursday evening and rain expected today to aid mop up.

Aikens Makin rolls into downtown with crafts and sounds

The 26th annual Aiken’s Makin festival opens today and runs through Saturday in downtown Aiken. Nearly 300 crafters and food vendors fill Park Avenue from York to Hayne. Libby Taylor says crowds will shop many unique crafts as entertainment from Southland Express Cloggers to the Aiken High School Sax Quintet lights up the two day event.

Festival crowds clash with downtown shops in Aiken

Thousands of festival goers and hundreds of crafters are forecast this weekend as Aiken hosts Makin. Downtown eateries expect a boost yet some businesses fear parking and crowding will hurt sales. Det Haislip of True Value on Laurens Street contends the event may force him to close Saturday. Sam Erb of West Side Bowery sees both challenges and benefits. Mike Enloe, Plum Pudding owner, plans to capitalize on foot traffic.

Former Aiken priest indicted by Charleston grand jury

The Charleston County Grand Jury indicted Monsignor Thomas A. Evatt on a single charge of lewd act on a child. The 52 year old former priest from St Mary Help of Christians was suspended in May after a 34 year old alleged victim said the abuse occurred in 1977 at St Joseph Church in Charleston. Evatt posted bonds and awaits trial after a preliminary hearing found cause to proceed.
