Groundbreaking for Aiken County Public Library Moves Forward

Five shifts of five workers with 25 golden shovels broke ground at the new Aiken County Public Library site in the old Aiken Elementary building. Construction includes renovating the south end and exterior, adding more than 24 000 square feet of space and over 200 parking spaces. The library will relocate from Banksia, with Board of Education offices to the north end of the building.

A letter allegedly by Rudolf Cordes said he would be released within 48 hours and tied his fate to Mohammed Ali Hamadi on trial in Frankfurt for air piracy in the 1985 TWA hijacking that injured a U.S. Navy diver. Bonn officials expressed optimism but could not confirm the report.

Snow Brings Quiet Day for Yellowstone Firefighters

Snow eased fires in Yellowstone National Park offering relief to crews as temperatures rise and wind speeds drop. Parks officials reported 3 to 4 inches of snow south of Mammoth Hot Springs with humidity near 90 percent, while a forecast of warm dry weather kept crews vigilant. In California’s Sierra Nevada foothills a wind driven fire burned 10 000 acres destroying 13 homes and 7 to 17 other structures and damaging boats at Lake Wildwood as about 700 firefighters fought the blaze and one worker avoided injury by sheltering under his bulldozer.
