The Aiken community enjoyed the first two days of Aiken's Makin' with a spread out four block craft area in downtown, despite storms. Officials estimate average crowds with organizers noting more visitors tomorrow. Vendors reported slower sales Friday but remained hopeful for higher turnout. Local residents praised the event and late- afternoon attendance appeared steady as 250 crafters showcased woodwork dolls prints and seasonal decor.
Government investigators plan a fall GAO visit to South Carolina to study the $2.8 billion video gambling industry and its effects on two communities, with Myrtle Beach Charleston and Columbia under consideration for the site.
Four state governors Colorado South Carolina Tennessee and Washington joined Energy Secretary Bill Richardson in a pact to clean up nuclear wastes. The agreement sets goals and deadlines tied to funding not yet approved by Congress. New Mexico hosted the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and was absent from the meeting.
