In a high turnout primary about 25 percent of Aiken voters chose a new mayor. Fred B. Cavanaugh won with 1,493 votes, about 60 percent, ahead of Robert S. Perry with 669 and Wade M. Brodie with 313 as mainly elderly residents watched ballots printed continuously to meet demand.
In the city contest Wade M. Brodie leads with 313 votes and Robert S. Perry 669, while Fred B. Cavanaugh trails at 1,493. District 3 sees Frampton W. Durban 447, Fay Hatcher 141, Robin Meehan 281, and Karen Papouchado 596, setting up a runoff.
Political newcomer Charles H. Stone won the Republican primary over Clyde R. Jackson 771 to 493 in Edgefield and Johnston precincts. Stone will face unopposed Democrat Jerry Bass in the general election. Bass runs Old Mc Donald Fish Camp. Stone, 65, praised Jackson for a clean campaign and plans more door-to-door voter contact before the October 29 District 82 House race.
