Judge Blasts DSS Over Aid Fraud Case in Aiken

Judge Paul M. Moore criticized the Aiken County DSS during the September term of general sessions court. Betty Turner pleaded guilty to obtaining money under false pretenses for defrauding family aid and Medicaid from 1972 to 1977, totaling about $5,679.72. Turner, mother of two, had claimed unemployment while working at Bath Mills division of United Merchants. Moore ordered repayment within five years and condemned local DSS staff for failing to prevent the scheme.

State crime rate climbs 11.8 percent in first half of 1979

South Carolina recorded sharp rises in violent crimes from January to June 1979, including murders up 25.8 percent and rapes up 15.3 percent, with total property stolen near 31.83 million dollars and only 29.7 percent recovered.
