The Aiken County Legislative Delegation held a four hour plus meeting at the delegation office and county courthouse to hear residents about shortfalls in recreation areas health services housing and water and sewer facilities. Requests for extra funding were discussed including 10 cents per capita for the Lower Savannah Planning and Development Commission and 15 cents per capita already provided. The delegation approved additional funds and considered space and operating budget requests from the Aiken Edgefield Community Action Group Inc. About 125 residents from Valley Wagener New Ellenton Beech Island and surrounding areas attended to urge clinics housing and recreation improvements.

Rail wage talks extend as unions postpone strike deadline
Negotiators for the railroad industry and four AFL-CIO unions extended wage talks after postponing the nationwide strike deadline by five days at a government request. Assistant Secretary of Labor W. J. Usery urged hard bargaining to avert government intervention and protect about 500,000 workers and the nation. Hijacked Airliners Held By Arabs Extend Deadline
Arab guerrillas extended the deadline for freeing 280 hostages to 10 p.m. EDT Saturday in exchange for three hijacked airliners.
