Uranium Waste Shipments Tied to SRS Shutdown Plan
McQuinn says six canisters shipped with ten more slated to Permafix for safety and cost savings. Remaining uranyl nitrate may go to Oak Ridge then Nevada in 2005. Site produced 35 000 drums of uranium oxide during plutonium operations and shipped 3 000 drums to Envirocare in Utah. 25 shipments of 100 drums each were sent to Envirocare before the program paused in March. Current backlog sits at 2 500 barrels awaiting shipment with Utah-bound oxide likely through 2007 depending on funding.
