Free Jazz Ambassadors Bring Versatile Show To Aiken

The Jazz Ambassadors of the U S Army Field Band perform a free concert at South Aiken High School at 7 30 p m tomorrow. The 20 member group led by Chief Warrant Officer Paul A Chiaravalle plays popular music modern jazz early Big Band and patriotic pieces. Tickets are available from the Aiken and North Augusta Chambers of Commerce and The Aiken Standard.

Thurmond Forming Fundraising Committee for 1984 Run

Sen Strom Thurmond has approved a new fundraising committee amid speculation he will seek an eighth term. The State reports un named Republicans say he will run. Thurmond says he has not decided but would consider if grassroots support and funds exist. Johnson of Bankers Trust is chairman with Emory Sneeden as treasurer.

Swiss Police Rescue Five From Embassy Siege in Bern

Swiss police stormed the Polish Embassy in Bern freeing five hostages after a quick operation. Four gunmen were arrested following a door breach using a remote detonator and gas, who had demanded Poland lift martial law and release internees.

Israeli Jets Hit Missiles In Lebanon

Israeli warplanes knocked out four mobile SA-9 missile batteries in Lebanon the day after striking one SA-9 battery in the same area. A Damascus spokesman said three air defense vehicles were hit with no reported Israeli losses at Daher el Baida, near Bhamdoun. The raid follows a similar attack on Wednesday. The military said Israel will not allow Syrian missiles to move into Lebanon.

Auction Draws Bids For Williams Estate Land Venture

Auctioneer Bob Tucker oversaw bids on ground leases for the K-Mart Bi-Lo Shopping Center and multiple Williams estate parcels along U S 1 78. Some tracts remained unsold, including a 4.41 acre home site and a 21 acre tract in University Estates.

Willcox Hotel owner to meet city officials on plans

Joseph Eways, owner since 1958, will confer with Aiken officials and city inspectors at the Department of Public Safety to discuss renovation plans for the Willcox Hotel, which the city classifies as unsafe and illegal and may order demolished if renovation fails. The meeting includes City Attorney Henry Summerall, Public Safety Director Carroll Busbee, and Building Inspector Brunson Cromer. Eways’ attorney Jack Early cannot comment due to ongoing litigation.

Area 5 Approved as Zone 5 Becomes Area 5 in School District

The U S Department of Justice approved Zone 5 becoming Area 5 in Aiken County School District, expanding the school board from seven to nine members. Area 5 includes New Ellenton Jackson Beech Island and Petticoat Junction, guaranteeing representation on the board. The slate for fall elections includes Area 5 candidate Robert H Slay and at large candidates Celestine Blassengale Linda Cleary Dhalma Lindler and Walter Moore. The change takes effect Oct 22 if no objections are raised within 60 days after Aug 23 approval.

Giant 64-Pound Yellow Jacket Nest Found Near Gloverville

Benny Hydrick and Heath Hydrick joined Marvin Franklin to locate a massive yellow jacket nest weighing 64 pounds near Gloverville. USC Aiken experts estimate it could house up to 5 million bees and say it took eight to ten years to build. The nest will yield larvae for fish bait for new owners.
