Popular Wine and Art benefit slated for October 18

Volunteers at the Aiken Center for the Arts prepare for the second annual A Taste of Wine and Art on Thursday October 18 from 7 to 9 pm expecting 300 to 400 attendees. The event features wines from around the world, food from local restaurants, jazz by Wayne Lord, and a silent art auction with works by local artists including Jean Pilk and Michael Tice. Major sponsors include Aiken Regional Medical Centers Ben Arnold Sunbelt Beverage BNFL Woodside Development Corp and Site 98. Man Arrested After Urinating On Grass In Aiken

Julio Caligua Alcagua, 33, was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Aiken Public Safety on gross intoxication after reports of a man urinating on grass along Two Notch Road behind H Odell Weeks near Bonner Street. He was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.

National retailers open in Aiken Exchange Center

Michaels and Pier 1 Imports begin operations at the Aiken Exchange Shopping Center on Whiskey Road alongside Target. Michaels opens Thursday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Sunday 1 30 to 7 p.m. window. Pier 1 starts at 10 a.m. Michaels covers 17 798 square feet with 60 staff. Pier 1 operates 820 stores nationally with 85 new stores planned this fiscal year. Grant expands Cumbee Center service area in SC

A $45,400 Violence Against Women Act grant from the federal government will expand the Cumbee Center to Assist Abused Persons. The funds, part of a statewide distribution in nine counties, support rural victims of domestic violence and related crimes through coordination, advocacy, and court transportation across Allendale and Barnwell counties.
