The Savannah River Site started treating high level liquid radioactive waste as a first step toward long term storage. On Saturday the weapons complex began adding a chemical to about 445 000 gallons of squid radioactive waste in a tank on site. The waste will become the first batch at the Defense Waste Processing Facility.
Four environmental groups and a former state representative plan to urge South Carolina Supreme Court to overturn the legislature’s decision to reopen the Barnwell low level radioactive waste landfill citing a constitutional prohibition on bills with multiple subjects. Governor Beasley backed reopening after a planned Dec 31 closure, but opponents argue using the budget to reopen violated the single subject rule.
In Columbia, 17 year old Calen Radwill fights extradition to South Carolina for the stabbing death of 15 year old Brandon Vinson in Lexington County. Radwill is held in Arizona and charged with murder kidnapping and possession of a knife during the commission of a violent crime.

Aiken County Emergency Services reports a medical technician woke to a mouse on an arm and was bitten. Privacy rules prevent identifying the worker detailing the incident, but the incident led to a workers’ compensation claim costing the county $139 through its insurance carrier.
