Savannah River Site begins treating high level radioactive waste

The Savannah River Site started treating high level liquid radioactive waste as a first step toward long term storage. On Saturday the weapons complex began adding a chemical to about 445 000 gallons of squid radioactive waste in a tank on site. The waste will become the first batch at the Defense Waste Processing Facility.

Four environmental groups and a former state representative plan to urge South Carolina Supreme Court to overturn the legislature’s decision to reopen the Barnwell low level radioactive waste landfill citing a constitutional prohibition on bills with multiple subjects. Governor Beasley backed reopening after a planned Dec 31 closure, but opponents argue using the budget to reopen violated the single subject rule.

Suspect fights extradition in teen stabbing case
