Mystery Plant Signals Early Autumn Arrival
Mystery Plant, a sunflowers family member, signals autumn with showy golden heads and cottony pubescence. The plant grows on dry sandy coastal dunes from Louisiana to Virginia, with 50 to 100 tubular flowers per head and ached seeds after pollination. John Nelson of the A C Moore Herbarium offers free identifications through USC.
