U S Bank National Association acting as trustee purchased the Aiken Mall property at the County Master in Equity auction held at the Aiken County Courthouse. The 35 acre site formerly owned by Aiken Mall Acquisitions LLC owed about 28.5 million including interest. Staffing shortages forced Aiken County to close three of its nine emergency medical stations on Saturday of the Labor Day weekend. County Administrator Clay Killian cited vacancies and multiple call outs, with stations in College Acres York Street and Bettis Academy Road Graniteville affected. Private providers Capital City South Star and Aiken Rescue participate in the county EMS network, while Jackson First Alert Rescue assists when available. Lisa Hintz of Aiken Rescue Inc. offered an extra truck but was told it wasn't needed, though her unit logged 16 calls in 24 hours on Saturday. Hintz urged greater cooperation to cover shortages and serve residents.
Metal thefts continue across Aiken County and beyond targeting homes churches businesses parking lots and even cellphone towers. A laundry mat on E Pine Log Road reported an air conditioner unit disassembled for aluminum causing 4500 in damage captured by security cameras. Authorities note thieves raid copper wiring catalytic converters and other nonferrous metals while urging residents to stay vigilant and follow a new state law requiring two year nonferrous metal permits for sellers.
