In Washington AP reports the Senate faces a decision on pay raises for senators, congressmen, and top federal officials as election year politics loom. The House voted 25 to 75 against annual election year hikes, denying raises to senators, federal judges and top executives.
Dayton Ohio launches busing of 18 421 public school students to comply with a federal desegregation order after a day of prayer for peaceful opening. No organized opposition, though some parents considered keeping children home to wait and see.
The Ford administration’s 5.9 billion dollar arms package mainly for Iran meets resistance in Congress over fears of a Persian Gulf arms race and Israel’s security. Sen. William Proxmire pledges to block most or all sales before the Oct. 2 adjournment, with others aiming to trim Saudi Arabia’s portion.
Emmy, barely a hurricane, travels east across the Atlantic away from land, expected to pass south of the Azores. Frances also moves east from the south but poses no land threat. At 6 am the National Hurricane Center placed Emmy near 33.0 N 30.4 W, about 400 miles south of the Azores, with gale winds expanding.
South Africa's Prime Minister John Vorster rejected Henry Kissinger's criticism of apartheid saying external moral lessons and threats will not steer his government. He asserted South Africa determines its own internal and foreign policies ahead of a planned meeting to discuss racial tensions in the region.
United Nations delegates welcomed the U S offer to help finance international seabed mining but doubted a full agreement could be reached before the Law of the Sea Conference closes on September 17. Aiken County marks one year since a U S Air Force B 52 Stratofortress crashed near Montmorenci. Initial reports of a small plane gave way to confirmation of a military craft with seven crewmen. Rescue efforts, parachute sightings, and later the discovery of three remaining crewmen include prayers, relief, and lingering questions about the incident.
