J B Lamb of Whiskey Road runs the J B Lamb Gulf Station for 25 years and works at least 11 hours daily six days a week with Sunday off. The Edgefield native, 65, has been in the service business 40 years and relies on his wife Jewel for bookwork and support while caring for customers and maintaining the station.
About 20 000 students begin tomorrow with elementary at 8 a.m. junior high and high school follow last year’s start. The schedule lists Labor Day September 1 and school opening September 2 with interim reports and holidays spread through November, December, March, and June.
A severe storm in Aiken caused wind and water damage to several buildings near Kalmia Plaza. Lightning struck Taco Bell at 1530 Richland Ave, damaging the interior wall and roof while sparing fire. A barn on Chukker Creek Road burned after a lightning strike.

Sylvia Nicholson, a sixth grade teacher at Leavelle McCampbell Middle School in Bath, won a 1980 Pontiac Trans Am as the Pace Car for the Southern 500 in Darlington. She previously bought a Sunbird on August 1 and now owns two cars after weeks of travel and a long contest journey.
About 20 000 students face a sweeping district overhaul with new schools and names. Midland Valley High opens replacing rivals at Langley Bath Clearwater and Leavelle McCampbell. Middle school grades six to eight replace old junior highs. Several elementary closures and reconfigurations occur across Area III and South Aiken High moves mid year to a new building adjacent to Kennedy Middle School.
Aiken County opens three new high schools this year after a 1976 bond. Midland Valley starts in a new building with about 1,500 students, joining Langley-Bath-Clearwater and Leavelle McCampbell to form a large Class AAAA school. South Aiken and Silver Bluff move to new campuses later, with expanded academics and language offerings.
