Sylvia Seegrist, 25, accused of killing two and wounding eight at Springfield Mall in Pennsylvania, urged the judge to kill her on the spot during arraignment. Police say she wore fatigues and used a .22 semiautomatic rifle, firing through the crowded mall until a college student subdued her. A 2-year-old boy and a 64-year-old man were among the victims.
In Beirut Prime Minister Rashid Karami announced the release of three kidnapped Soviet Embassy employees after a month in west Beirut. They were freed by abductors in a Sunni Muslim area near the embassy and were described as in relatively good condition. A fourth employee was killed after the Sept 30 kidnapping.
Pittsburgh based United States Steel Corp plans a 3.6 billion stock swap to acquire Texas Oil & Gas Corp expanding beyond steel. Chairman David M. Roderick says the move could prompt a name change to reflect new business mix while noting steel revenue will remain a minority share.
