West Germany will compensate Czechoslovak citizens persecuted by the Nazis in concentration camps for medical experiments. The $2.025 million fund was approved by Chancellor Brandt's government and formalized in a signing by finance ministry delegations from both countries.
A 65 foot Norway Spruce from Crandall Park Glens Falls was picked as the National Christmas Tree. The Adirondack native, 65 to 70 years old, will be felled November 21 and depart November 24 by truck to Washington for Christmas Week ceremonies with President Nixon lighting the tree on the White House lawn.
The event backed by American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will allow the silent majority to express views on Vietnam on November 11. Organizers say it will not be a counter demonstration to antiwar protests planned for November 13 to 15. Dr Charles Moser of George Washington University says the rally seeks to preserve freedom even if antiwar groups demonstrate.
Charles A. Lindbergh 67 crash landed a single engine plane in Isabela province north of Manila during a Panamin reconnaissance flight. He and a passenger were unhurt. Lindbergh arrived last week to assist Panamin with natives and is a brigadier general noted for 1927 Spirit of St Louis solo flight.
South Carolina first STAND education center to warn teens about narcotics opened in Spartanburg this Saturday. Rep. Albert Watson notes more centers will follow in other cities as experts lecture students on drug dangers. Dr. Beamer of The University of South Carolina will speak at the inaugural seminar.
Negro students from Vassar College Afro-American Society, aided by male students, occupied the administration section of the Main Building early Thursday. They sealed the doors, disrupted mail and telephone service, and curtailed cafeteria operations, while dormitory wings remained unaffected.
Former Alabama Governor George D. Wallace began a three week trip to Southeast Asia with a first stop in Dallas as he seeks to learn military and political conditions. Senator John J. Williams charged that in the final Johnson days a federal land gift worth over 2 million dollars went to Texans with faulty oversight. He said FHA loans totaling 8 million and HEW grants near 500 thousand financed a Dallas Austin nursing home and apartments, with the land pledged as down payment. Williams alleged White House action overrode officials and warned the deal resembled a government land grab harming taxpayers.
Mississippi will implement the Supreme Court ruling for immediate desegregation in 33 state school districts while contesting the ruling. Atty Gen A Summer said the timing is immaterial as the state will pursue changes, and Gov Williams condemned the plan as social experimentation. Approximately 50 cases fill the fall term calendar of the Aiken County Court of Common Pleas, opening Monday at the county courthouse. Most cases are not expected to go to trial. several involve accident damage suits and condemnation suits tied to Interstate Highway 20 construction. Judge Francis B. Nicholson, resident judge of the Eighth Judicial Circuit, will preside and may convene a special criminal term in the third week if civil court uses less time. Nicholson, from Greenwood, Wofford graduate, holds degrees from the University of South Carolina and George Washington University and served in the state senate 1961–66 before being elected to the Eighth Circuit in 1967 to fill the remainder of Steve C Griffith’s term.
The PTA carnival closed its second and final night with crowds about as large as previous years. Attendance hovered near 6 000, with weather improving on Thursday boosting turnout. Food, candy apples and midway entertainment drew steady lines as music acts and a square dance group performed into the night.
