CHICAGO The keepers of the Doomsday Clock move back its hands to reflect a reduced threat of global nuclear war. The exact new setting will be published in The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists December issue. The clock has stood at 11 50 p.m. since 1990 after Eastern Europe changes and Gorbachev reforms.
High wind prevented helicopter seeds from being dropped on the denuded Oakland hills as winter rains loom. Authorities seeded 1400 acres with grass and clover before wind halted work. Fences and dams will be built and inspectors survey structures for safe re entry.
