Trapped Whales Drift Toward Freezing Arctic Channel
ARROW Alaska two gray whales wedged under Arctic ice near a channel carved by two Soviet icebreakers began to freeze as rescuers prepared a final effort. Night fell with sub zero temps as crews left the whales in a breathing hole 330 yards from open sea. biologist David Withrow called it essentially one long dive.
