Fort Bragg North Carolina soldiers exercising calisthenics were shot at by a Fort Bragg soldier. A base spokesman said one person died and 10 or more were wounded with reports varying. A suspect was arrested and in custody as an investigation begins.

A racially and gender mixed jury in Aiken found Tyrus L. Laney and Keith Dunbar guilty of assaulting a man and his child in H. Odell Weeks Park last July. NEW ELLENTON The New Ellenton City Council voted to reject state offers to help bail out the sewer system debt. The move comes as residents, who had previously shouted at meetings, watched the council stand firm over the $5.25 million obligation with potential relief proposals now unlikely to pass.
Councilman Michael T. Terry says the state softened its stance as the city eyes a quicker recovery from the sewer program fiasco. He accuses McNair Law Firm Nations Bank and Cantelou and Associates of deceitful tactics and possible fraud. He urges citizens to contact the attorney general to pursue financial responsibility and suggests options including linking the system to Horse Creek Valley and transferring operation to Aiken County.
County Administrator William Shepherd said he will send a memo to all county department heads next week to start a study of job classifications and pay structures. Departments will have three weeks to respond about each job, especially unique roles, to see if descriptions and pay grades fit duties. The move follows weeks of pay controversy and stalled advancement prospects. The county has over 400000 available for raises in the 1996 budget, while Councilwoman LaVana McKenzie urges a new approach. A union offer for free training and better health insurance from IUCE representative Lane Parker was rejected at a county meeting.
