Former hostage calls for release of other captives

In a letter published on what would have been Terry Anderson's 40th birthday, David Jacobsen urged freedom for foreign captives in Lebanon. Anderson, AP's chief Middle East correspondent, is the longest-held among more than 20 missing and kidnapped foreigners, many believed held by Shiite militants, with Terry Waite also missing since January.

More Names Added To Vietnam Memorial

Washington AP report says twenty four more names join the Vietnam Veterans Memorial roll call, bringing total to 58 156. Names cover those who died from wounds or remain missing, approved by the Defense Department, with engraving to finish by Veterans Day observance on November 11.

U S and World Markets Open Higher Amid Volatile Trading

Arms Race At Sea Gathers 15000 Nuclear Warheads Worldwide

U S and Soviet navies have built a large nuclear arsenal at sea with about 15000 warheads and bombs, per analyst William Arkin. The study notes rapid growth in naval missiles and ordnance, with the United States holding 5632 warheads on long range missiles and 3715 non strategic weapons, while the Soviet Union holds 2902 and 2526 respectively. It also cites 278 U S ships and 624 Soviet ships capable of handling nuclear weapons.
