The U S Embassy advised all American women and children and nonessential men to leave Beirut as clashes engulf the Moslem Christian districts. An embassy spokesman said the advice was informal and no evacuation was ordered, with about 3 500 Americans remaining and roughly the same number already departed.
Generalissimo Francisco Franco rallied again during the night but officials said he remained in critical condition. Spain waited for a new era as his 36 year dictatorship neared its end after heart attacks and slowing improvement. The 13 man medical team reported rhythmic upsets and congestive failure, with a blood transfusion given for a gastric hemorrhage.
London AP reports Trade Minister Peter Shore says Britain could swing a foreign trade surplus if oil imports were reduced. He forecasts 105 million barrels of North Sea oil next year, with energy officials eyeing up to 140 million barrels, potentially cutting fuel imports by 1.2 to 1.6 billion dollars. The government aims for oil self-sufficiency by 1980 at 700 to 910 million barrels annually.
Turkey reportedly will buy about 60 helicopters from Russia while rejecting Moscow’s MIG 21 and MIG 23 jet offers for the Turkish air force. The move, if confirmed, could mark a notable shift in Turkey’s 30 year reliance on U S arms, with Russia's current presence limited to a few trucks bought three years ago.
Sen. John Tower plans a meeting with President Ford to discuss school integration options other than busing. The talks follow a weekend anti-busing protest in Washington and precede week-long hearings on four anti-busing constitutional amendments. Tower, in a Oct 10 letter, urged a method to ensure quality education within constitutional bounds without court-ordered busing.
An AP report from Raleigh notes projections that guns will surpass cars as the main cause of violent death by 1980 if trends hold. Researchers Dr. Lenda Norton and Dr. Cecil Slome led a two year study by the North Carolina State Medical Examiner's Office recording 2,455 gunshot deaths and showing 876 in 1968 versus 1,229 in 1974.

Johnny Molony modeled an orange tiger paw suit after Clemson's game as Debby Sykes crawled on hands and knees to recover a broken puka shell necklace. The scene followed a weekend that left the Tigers' fans with nerve and fortitude.
In General Sessions Court Thomas Gilley testified he shot Gene Leverett in self defense after Leverett threatened him with a cue stick and forced entry. The jury acquitted Gilley of murder.
A dozen bombs exploded early today in New York Chicago and Washington causing minor damage and no injuries. The FALN Puerto Rico separatist group claimed responsibility for the New York blasts linking to prior attacks. Police searched for suspects in several locations while emergency teams investigated unexploded devices.
An Edgefield County couple, Mr. and Mrs. Sam P. Allen Jr., died in a crash when a tanker truck carrying asphalt primer skidded into their car on S C 378 about 13 miles north of Edgefield. The tanker, driven by Jimmy R. Odom of Manning, overturned and exploded after Odom swerved to avoid a deer. he received minor injuries and was treated at Edgefield County Hospital. An inquest is planned next week.
A head on collision in Graniteville on a dirt road near Highway One was the sixth wreck involving Aiken County Sheriff Department vehicles in seven weeks. Ricky Ryan was charged with driving too fast for conditions. Deputy James Herzog was not charged. Damage to the sheriff’s car is estimated at 900 dollars.
The forecast calls for showers through the week with tomorrow reaching near 80 degrees and tonight's low around 55. Rain chances are 20 percent today, 10 percent tonight and Tuesday, with scattered showers expected for the rest of the week.
