Congress moves a Ways and Means extension favoring earners between 10 000 and 30 000 dollars, predicting lower taxes next year. The plan would preserve 1975 standard deductions and introduce a 2 percent credit on the first 12 000 of taxable income with a maximum credit of 240 dollars per return.
Five sheriff cars were damaged in seven weeks with two total wrecks. Total damages tally about 2800 dollars, while two unrepaired cars are worth 4500 dollars. The board chair said the record is excessive and bids were not sought for repairs.

Former Attorney General John N Mitchell testifies today before the Senate intelligence committee about a dispute with former CIA Director Richard Helms. The session, in a chandeliered caucus room, follows three days of hearings on illegal mail openings by the CIA and FBI and references Helms earlier saying he told Mitchell about the mail openings in 1971.

Connecticut's Social Services Department saved nearly $3 million in 1974 by paying transportation costs for 867 welfare families who wished to leave the state. The department spent $146,865 to transport 1,837 people out of state and saved $2,929,000 in welfare payments. The move is voluntary with a letter of support from a family or friend, often sending families to Puerto Rico and the Carolinas where benefits are lower.
