Henry A. Kissinger, president Nixon's foreign policy adviser, arrives at Andrews Air Force Base Maryland after six days in Peking. He declines to speak to reporters as efforts to finalize arrangements for the Nixon visit to Red China continue.
About 96 protesters were arrested near the White House for obstructing a sidewalk during antiwar actions. Police reported 202 arrests on charges of orderly conduct as marchers sat on a street intersection and chanted slogans, while remaining nonviolent.
In Charlotte, Myers Park High School erupted into fighting just before classes. Police used all available cruisers and officers were dispatched to the affluent southeast campus amid injuries with no clear cause or numbers. Officials directed students to attend class or face jail.
President Tito of Yugoslavia arrives in Washington to begin a six day state visit with talks planned with President Nixon and senior officials. He spent Tuesday night in Gander Newfoundland during a brief stopover on his trip from Belgrade. U S officials will seek his help in easing Middle East tensions and reopening the Suez Canal.
President Nixon greeted ten Vietnam veterans who returned as civilian volunteers to a South Vietnamese hamlet to build housing for disabled soldiers. The group reported constructing 20 housing units without pay or weapons, expressing gratitude for the support.
A $10 million auto pollution control laboratory will be dedicated today in Ann Arbor. The facility, described by EPA Administrator William D. Ruckelshaus, will test vehicles to certify compliance with federal air pollution emission standards.

The South Carolina House refused to immediately grant a conference committee power to rewrite a Senate reapportionment bill, widening the rift with the Senate which had earlier approved free conference authority. The Senate vote 42-2 sent the measure to the conferees while the House tabled the motion and ordered talks to continue. Republican Sens. McMillan and Wofford opposed the free power, while Sen. Gressette, chair, warned failure could invite federal court involvement. The process faces a rush deadline as reconvened sessions struggle to align the two chambers’ versions.

They announced common ground on political consultations and European security after private talks.
Peking hailed the UN vote admitting Communist China and ousting the Nationalists while predicting U.S. and Japanese efforts to create two Chinas. Chiang Kai shek vowed to overthrow the Communist regime as he spoke from Taiwan and warned of ongoing threats to return to the mainland.
