Tugs using detergents split a mile-long oil slick from the grounded tanker Pacific Glory off the Isle of Wight in the English Channel. Officials said major pollution danger to southern British beaches was not excessive as crews awaited calmer seas to transfer 60,000 tons of crude remaining in the ship’s tanks.

In Costa Mesa California a raven named Leroy is up for grabs as owner Harold Berg plans to sell his home. The bird habitually lifts wallets and watches and stores them in its nest on the roof. Berg warns buyers the raven can snatch valuables and tear them apart if not desired.
A small package exploded Sunday night at Washingtons main post office two blocks north of the Capitol. Walter R. Smith, 30, a postal worker, was blown from a forklift but suffered only shock. Officials report damage confined to parcels on the conveyor.
Workmen to clear the Clinchfield Railroad line near Green Mountain North Carolina after two trains collided head on early Sunday. The engineer and brakeman on one train were killed and the crew of the second train jumped from their engine before impact. Both locomotives burned and nine diesel units plus about 11 cars blocked the line between Spartanburg South Carolina and Erwin Tennessee.
At the UN General Assembly Egypt urged immediate action to implement the 1967 Security Council resolution demanding Israel withdraw from territories seized in the war. Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad opened debate, while African delegates drafted a resolution for indirect talks under Gunnar V. Jarring. Israel urged halt to blame and noted Soviet missiles near the Suez Canal.

Robert I. Newman director for Allied Gulf Nuclear Services spoke to Aiken Rotarians on the current status of the Barnwell Nuclear Fuel Plant. The plant recovers unused uranium and plutonium from spent fuel and serves 60 to 70 plants at five tons per day. Newman, born in Jacksonville, earned a Tufts chemical engineering degree in 1943 and has led Allied Chemical Nuclear Products projects since 1962. He is a licensed professional engineer in New Jersey and South Carolina.
Candidates for Aiken County Council will address voters at a public session in the Sand cafeteria at North Augusta Plaza. Ben Rusche of the County Government Study Committee is also listed to appear. A question and answer period is planned.

Aiken County Supervisor Fred Watsie Scott of 3431 Trolley Line Road died Saturday after an extended illness. Funeral services were held at Memorial Baptist Church in Aiken with Rev. Clinton B. Henderson and Rev. J. E. Pollock officiating. Burial followed at Valluce Cemetery. Scott, born November 22 1908 in Valluce, began as a Department of Public Works foreman in 1932 and became county supervisor in 1944, serving until his death. He was reelected in 1952 1956 1960 and 1964 and won 1968 by a 3 to 2 margin. He chaired the South Carolina Association of County Road Officials from 1952 until death. He also served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board and other groups in executive roles.
A gun collection valued at over 15000 dollars was stolen from James Moates near Salley over the weekend. 22 rifles and shotguns, including mint mark firearms, were taken after a back door was forced open. The theft was found when the Moates family returned home yesterday.
