Oklahoma beat Colorado 24-6 and Nebraska defeated Kansas State 56-3 while Cincinnati lost to Florida 10-48. LSU, Auburn, UCLA, Notre Dame and Michigan State tied or won, with key upsets and close games across the top teams.

President Reagan said he is in no hurry to invite Mikhail Gorbachev to the United States while pressing for a treaty to ban intermediate range missiles. Secretary Shultz signaled willingness to sign without a summit if needed, stressing the importance of finalizing the treaty.

A National Academy report for the U S Department of Energy concludes Savannah River Plant safety problems have been known for decades and that corrective steps and public warning were not taken. The NRC study, prompted by the Chernobyl disaster, questions containment at SRP and Hanford reactors and foresees renewed calls for independent DOE reactor safety inspections. The final NRC findings are due next week with another report expected in about nine months.
An explosion wrecked the Kuwait Pan Am sales office at Al-Gharbally Travel injuring no one. The blast follows Iranian attacks and threats in the Gulf, with Kuwait condemning Iran’s actions and Gulf ministers urging unity against attacks.
