Safety Problems Not Corrected at Savannah River Plant

A National Academy report for the U S Department of Energy concludes Savannah River Plant safety problems have been known for decades and that corrective steps and public warning were not taken. The NRC study, prompted by the Chernobyl disaster, questions containment at SRP and Hanford reactors and foresees renewed calls for independent DOE reactor safety inspections. The final NRC findings are due next week with another report expected in about nine months.
