Mixed reviews follow Peres peace proposal from Jordan and Egypt
King Hussein and President Mubarak, after a four hour meeting in Amman, gave mixed judgments on Shimon Peres plan for a broader Middle East settlement. Hussein supported some points like possible international conference and UNSC resolutions 242 and 338 but warned of contradictions and insisted any talks occur under international auspices. Mubarak found some good points but others unsatisfactory and both leaders stressed no direct talks outside a multilateral framework. Meanwhile the U S Senate moved to block Jordan arms sales unless direct talks resume, a stance Hussein rejected as harming regional credibility. State Department disclosed Richard Murphy visited Jordan this week.
