Relay for Life kickoff in Aiken ignites luminaries for May event
Cancer survivors, caregivers and volunteers gathered at St. Paul Lutheran Church for a kickoff meeting. Luminaries along the entryway preview the May 14 15, 2004 Relay event as co chairpersons Holly Waltz and Lynn Drinkwater aim to raise up to 2 million dollars for American Cancer Society research. Survivor stories followed, including Carolyn Stevers on melanoma diagnosed in 1971.

Morrison convicted in 1994 Bethany Cemetery murder
Aiken man Joseph Morrison III was found guilty of the 1994 shooting death of Chris Pollin. The circuit judge sentenced him to life with no parole after a jury deliberation of about two hours. Morrison will serve 20 years before parole eligibility.

Aiken projects win Community Builders awards in Newberry
Four Aiken projects received 2002 Community Builders honors in Newberry. The Aiken Center for the Arts won the Gaines Jontz Rehabilitation Award for moving to a downtown storefront and fundraising. Newberry Place earned Outstanding New Construction for six downtown town homes and a 60 space parking area. Newberry Street Festival Center got Outstanding Public Improvement, and the Washington Building Washington Center for the Performing Arts earned Outstanding Public Private Partnership. Janet Morris praised the innovative local efforts.
