Landmark Highway Office Serves Drivers and Patrol in Aiken
The S C Highway Department building on Richland Avenue East houses the motor vehicle and driver's license division and serves as the Aiken County garrison for the State Highway Patrol. About 350 new licenses or renewals are processed monthly and 82,104 county residents hold licenses. The facility opened in May 1975 with a 3,500 square foot structure costing 84,400 dollars.

University of South Carolina Aiken hosts activist Catholic nun Dr Lucy Freibert for a talk titled Hidden Hands Looking for Women Writers on October 31 at 3 30 p m in room vem 116 Classroom Building Sponsored by the USCA Feminist Forum and the Office of Academic Affairs the speaker will discuss her book Hidden Hands An Anthology for Women Writers and the 1986 Sally Coppelman Award from the MLA She will also address anthologizing little known or forgotten women writers prior to a class talk on The Changing Role of Women in the Church Freibert holds a BA from Spalding College MA from St Louis University and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin She has taught at Spalding and the University of Louisville since 1968 and was named outstanding faculty member there in 1973.

Jack O' Lantern Jubilee Set Saturday in North Augusta
The fifth annual Jack O Lantern Jubilee will take place in North Augusta on Saturday Oct 25 at North Augusta Plaza with a parade crafts dunking booth bands fashion shows hayrides and hot air balloon rides weather permitting. Activities run from 10 a.m. with a children’s costume parade at Belks and continue through the afternoon featuring multiple fashion shows and a prize drawing for a 19 inch color TV. Celebrity appearances include Sunny 105’s Sonny Ray and the Rayettes.

Freedom From Smoking Clinic begins at HCA Aiken
A six week program sponsored by the American Lung Association and HCA Aiken Regional Medical Centers starts Wednesday November 12 from 7 to 9 pm in the first floor classroom.
