Reserve deputies serve county with trained backups
William B. Paschal and 19 volunteers join the Aiken County Sheriff's Department as reserve deputies. They undergo the same training as regular deputies, must provide 20 hours monthly, and can arrest and carry a badge only when with a deputy. The program costs the county nothing, uses surplus uniforms, and has produced some recruits who later joined full time or federal service.
