Carter aides say Iran hostages deal possible with flexible talks

US officials say Iran may agree to hostage demands if both sides show flexibility. They note four Khomeini conditions including Shah Pahlavi assets, frozen funds, and noninterference. Carter has frozen $8 billion in Iranian assets and could release them quickly.

Koon Bail Denied in Columbia County Murder Case

Barnwell judge denies bond for Paul F. Koon after a 20 minute hearing Tuesday. He is charged in the murder and kidnapping of Valerie White Newsome, whose body was found in Aiken County on October 15 after authorities followed information from Koon about the body location. A separate $30,000 bond was set for a May 15 sexual assault charge in an unrelated Aiken County case.

Voting Precincts Realigned in Aiken County Elections

Elections Commission chairman Ralph Haywood announced changes to polling places for Precincts 1 2 10 35 and 43. Precinct 1 moved to city municipal auditorium, Precinct 2 to American Legion Post 212, Precinct 10 to American Legion Post 232, Precinct 35 to Eustis Park Special School and then back to Charles Wesley United Methodist Church, Precinct 43 to Windsor recreation center.

Candidates Face Voters in North Augusta Forum

The Aiken County Board of Education candidates will answer questions at 7 30 tonight at North Augusta Senior High School on Knobcone Avenue. The event, sponsored by the North Augusta High PTA, features 11 candidates with prepared and spontaneous responses. A LWV forum occurred Tuesday and another is planned next Thursday at Laurens Street Elementary.

Urban bird dog Pete finds new home in town

Pete the local bird dog left country life for the city but struggled with unfamiliar noises. He tried a couple of other living accommodations before returning to town where he now appears to be adjusting well.

Fifth annual car show highlights fuel efficient models

Local dealers display a lineup at Kalmia Plaza with cars and trucks from Chrysler Plymouth, Ford, Chevrolet, Buick Cadillac, GMC and Toyota. Models include the K Car and Plymouth Champ with high mpg, Silverado with four barrell spark control, Granada, Escort world car, Cutlass Supreme and Corolla Tercel. The Farmers and Merchants Bank sponsored event runs Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
