At 7 30 p m the Aiken County Board of Education will name Area 2 and Area 5 elementary schools formed from consolidations. Presentations on North Augusta High School facilities and a sidewalk concern near Area 1 are on the agenda, along with roof, staff, and transportation items and student recognition.
A 50 percent chance of thundershowers is expected tonight with partly cloudy skies and lows in the low 60s. Thursday brings a 30 percent chance of thundershowers and highs in the mid 80s. Through Wednesday to Friday expect partly cloudy skies, warm temps, and scattered showers or thundershowers increasing Friday with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s.

The Edgefield courthouse square hosted a ceremony for a bronze statue of U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond. Politicians lauded his deeds and influence as hundreds gathered in October heat. Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker praised Thurmond’s service and Edgefield’s tradition of governance. The statue was funded by private contributions and features the 81 year old senator’s likeness with the marching band from Strom Thurmond High School performing.
Maria Kirby-Smith unveiled the pink granite pedestal statue in Edgefield. The Thurmond family attended, with Sen Strom Thurmond's four children Nancy Moore Thurmond J Strom II Juliana Gertrude and Paul Reynolds. Judge William W Wilkins spoke recalling Thurmond’s Capitol Hill work ethic and service ethic.
In South Carolina's Third District race on the November 6 ballot Rep. Derrick, 48, seeks a sixth term amid opposition from Democratic challenger Butler Derrick and Libertarian Robert Madden. Clarence Taylor criticizes Derrick's record and Madden targets federal growth.
Mondale pressed his charge that Reagan lacks command of facts and leadership to win an upset as the campaign enters its final two weeks. Reagan defended his record and control, while supporters on both sides claimed victory. The debate echoed their daily exchanges as voters decide who leads.
Aiken County Public Service Authority restructuring returns to the council Tuesday night at the request of Councilwoman Fay Hatcher. After a 5-4 April defeat, proponents seek the five votes needed for passage at a special meeting possibly triggered by five members or the chairman.
