Corkscrew device offers real promise in stroke treatment
The MERCI Retriever developed by UCLA researchers and licensed to Concentric Medical aims to remove brain clots up to eight hours after stroke onset. Interventional neuroradiologists thread a catheter to the brain, deploy a nitinol corkscrew, capture the clot, and withdraw it into the tube while a balloon prevents a secondary stroke.
